All human action and decision take place within a powerful cultural framework made up from institutions, habit and law/regulation. The familiarity of these constraints often makes them invisible. As a result social and behavioural scientists have promoted disciplines such as economics, political science and psychology as a means of explaining how people behave. The speaker will argue that both at National and Corporate levels this ignorance of cultural realities leads to many unwanted and potentially life threatening consequences. The solution lies in the new and (as yet) undeveloped science of “cultural engineering”.

Our Speaker Will Sutherland, from the UK worked both as a civil servant and then management consultant before becoming an author on, and living exponent of, self-sufficiency and sustainability.

As this is a special event , red wine, soft drinks and snacks will be served.

Speaker – Will Sutherland, author of “The Councillor’s Handbook” and joint author of “The New Complete Book of Self Sufficiency” published by Dorling and Kindersly

Will Sutherland has had a life long interest in the processes which lead to the collapse of human civilisations. After studying Mathematics and Law at Cambridge University he spent 10 years in the Whitehall Civil service before moving on to become a Senior Consultant with Ernst and Young. In 1992 he played a key role in the creation of the “Alternative Treaties” written by over 175 worldwide NGOs after the first Earth Summit and now posted on the United Nations website. After this he left the business world and moved to Ireland where he grew most of his own food and began to teach the skills of “self-sufficiency”. He has talked and written widely on the institutional processes which create a cultural prison preventing the achievement of sustainability.

In Knowledge Management the attention is mainly focused on the knowledge side and not on the ignorance side. In our daily work, we have to deal with incomplete information. Mostly, we have no time or no resources to gather all relevant information. For that reason we should take ignorance and dealing with strategies to overcome ignorance in organizations more seriously. In this sense we should also extend our understanding of knowledge management by thinking about managing what we do not know. Taking this into account, we have to shift from Knowledge Management to Ignorance Management.

Within her talk, Prof. Wilkesmann will show how experts like doctors deal with ignorance and which tools (e.g. apps, google, critical incident reporting systems) really help to overcome their ignorance. Prof. Wilkesmann will present some short and crisp as well as practice-oriented research results, which base on qualitative interviews with 50 doctors and a comprehensive survey with 2,853 doctors currently employed in hospitals, conducted in the spring of 2012.

The event will be interactive and discussion focused.

Prof. Dr. WilkesmannMaximiliane (Maxie) Wilkesmann is assistant professor at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Science at the TU University of Dortmund in Germany. She received her PhD in 2009 at the Ruhr-University of Bochum for which she has been awarded a scholarship from the Hans-Boeckler Foundation. In 2012, the co-authored paper “Knowledge transfer as interaction between experts and novices supported by technology“ has been awarded in the category “Outstanding Paper Award Winner” of the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2012 in the category “highly recommended paper”. Her research interests include knowledge management, knowledge transfer, organization studies, teaching and learning with new media, and dealing with ignorance in organizations.

Human behaviour is a key concept to be understood when sharing knowledge and creating an environment where knowledge is openly shared. This session will explore some of the behaviours that enhance knowledge sharing using an innovative techniques known as the Organizational Zoo. This was developed by Arthur Shelley of Intelligent Answers and uses animal metaphor to understand human behaviours. The technique is a safe and fun way to look at our own behaviours in particular contexts, and to enable us to make some shifts and changes where necessary.

The session will be highly interactive, so come along prepared to participate and engage in conversation.  We suggest you complete a profile before coming to the event.  Click on “Pre-session profiler” tab to find out more.

Returning one of the core themes of KM , Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing,  our guest speaker from the UK, Dr. Harpal Bhusate, will summarise how Vodaphone, one of the world’s leading telecommunications companies, is tackling challenges in the cultural and technology changes required to succeed .

We aim to make this event more intimate and a more collaborative learning experience for everyone attending, therefore following Dr Bhusate’s introduction, we will facilitate a Knowledge Café with our participants around the following key barriers to Collaboration and Knowledge sharing.  

  • Not communicating the real, measurable benefits of Collaboration to the business
  • Information “silos” blocking collaboration between teams and locations
  • Enablement of employees and appropriate incentives to collaborate and share knowledge
  • A focus on short-term results, and no appropriate technology platform or strategy

There are 1.5bn global social networking users and 80% of online users interact with social networks regularly. But organizations have adopted social technologies at half the rate of consumers.

IBM Survey (2012) of 1,709 CEOs found that only 16% of the organisations have some form of social collaboration and 57% say they will be committed to building a social organisation and looking for opportunities to increase communication, collaboration and innovation.

Further research conducted by the Corporate Leadership Council for Human Resources reported that improving the connections across the workforce is a top priority for 79% of the organisations. The current economic challenges are pushing organisations to consider collaboration initiatives to reduce duplication and improve speed to market. Initial research concluded that collaboration can help to improve revenue targets by up to 36% and employee engagement by up to 38%.

However, effective collaboration remains to be a challenge across many multinational enterprises. There are many reasons which impact an organization’s ability to collaborate. Most importantly, the environment in many organisations does not fully integrate collaboration, through a number of weaknesses:

  • Not communicating the real, measurable benefits of Collaboration to the business
  • Information “silos” blocking collaboration between teams and locations
  • Enablement of employees and appropriate incentives to collaborate and share knowledge
  • A focus on short-term results, and no appropriate technology platform or strategy

Speaker BIO : Dr. Harpal Bhusate
After completing her PhD at Imperial College, London, Pal has spent 20 years’ in a corporate world in the Energy and Telecommunications sector. Her experience ranges from managing a complex and large-scale gas network, rolling out the first 3G network in the UK and creating from scratch the first multifunctional shared service centre for Vodafone in India. More recently she has implemented a world-class, modern online workplace – providing access for over 80 local markets and partners across the globe, and has led the way as a champion and evangelist for social collaboration. Her wealth of knowledge of the cross functional operational challenges and talent for always taking the simplest approach have been her key strengths in delivering such huge business impact. Being a mother of 3 teenagers, and having recruited and managed recent graduates, she truly appreciates the changing needs of the future workplace 2020 environment where there will be 5 generations at work and has the passion to shape this world.
