Nobody needs to tell you that times are hard and uncertainty regarding the future is high.\u00a0 Despite the coordinated global action by governments, the worst fears of the financial crisis seem to have been avoided and the world economy is stabilising, although it does seem to be rather fragile still.<\/p>\n

In this climate, it would be easy to put KM on the back burner and concentrate on more immediate priorities, with the focus placed on cost cutting. But even cost cutting requires a strategic context, which KM can provide. Just ask those who have outsourced part of their business hastily, and lost vital company knowledge.<\/p>\n

My view is that while KM is no longer a management fad, it is now rising up to what Gartner calls the slope of enlightenment and being increasingly employed to make organisations more productive. New fads such as Social Computing are in any case strongly linked to KM and a reminder that some of the most impressive KM projects are called anything but KM!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Society continues to focus on KM practice and is pleased to report growing\u00a0 support from the large business and public service organisations with the Hong Kong Police,\u00a0 Census and Statistics Department, and the MTR becoming corporate members during this year. Three of the six Hong Kong MAKE award winners are members of the Society and a fourth provided a keynote talk at our 2009 Conference.<\/p>\n

The society is a strong supporter of the MAKE awards, and sees the process as being very helpful in raising the profile of KM in Hong Kong<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have maintained a full set of events (see below) with both local and International speakers, and decided to go ahead with the annual conference in March with a much lower admission price for members and non-members alike.<\/p>\n

The recent trial of a special event for our corporate members was very well received, and our plan to engage members at a strategic management level is attracting interest from a wider group of firms such as HSBC, SFC, HKEX and the Hospital Authority, and with it the chance to grow support from those organisations that could really benefit from a KM Journey.<\/p>\n

This naturally links me to this year\u2019s events, which are covered in more detail in a later section of the report. But I must highlight here the fact that The KM Journey of the HK Police, presented in May, received around 80 registrations \u2013 a full house in our venue of choice. That was extremely pleasing to us.<\/p>\n

The feedback from this year\u2019s Conference was exceptional. Many actually called it the best they have ever been to. It was especially pleasing to many of us that a local KM expert, Eva Lo of Langham Place, virtually stole the show. She presented a fascinating example in an industry that has traditionally shied away from KM. She was more than capable of standing up to the well known speakers from abroad. They were, naturally enough, right on target. Nicolas Gorjestani of the World Bank arrived just as a group was meeting in London to \u2018discuss\u2019 the financial crisis and Nicolas began with that wonderful quote from Albert Einstein, paraphrased here: Those who got us into this mess are not the ones to be able to get us out of it. Old friends were on top of their form as well, with Leif Edvinsson, Patrick Lambe, Dave Snowden and Kim Sbarcea.<\/p>\n

We rounded the year off with an extraordinary talk over lunch at the FCC with one of the leading gurus of KM, Max Boisot. He delighted those able to meet him with wit and wisdom.<\/p>\n

It is easy to understand why his take on KM is the foundation for what so many others do. Finally, I should like to give thanks to the time and effort put in by the Board members, and several others who have supported our operations. Meeting monthly on Saturdays at coffee shop locations in Central, Hung Hom, and\u00a0 sometimes in Discovery Bay, a highly collaborative team has been formed.<\/p>\n

However, time has been at a premium for all of us and we have only been able to maintain a basic level of administration, and our plans to develop a next generation web site have moved forward slowly. There is an outstanding issue regarding the ownership of the HKKMS website domain, as well. We certainly hope that 2010 will see an improved economy and happier times. The
